Hi NAMIWalks 2020 Team Captains!
We are excited to see you all on April 4th at John F. Kennedy Park, Fiesta Area. (See attached map ‘JFK Fiesta Area Location’) Below are the instructions and the procedure for walk day, Saturday April 4th. Please take 5 minutes to read through the entire email (especially anything in RED) to ensure that you have a successful Walk. Be sure to relay any necessary information to your team members. Note, Walk staff will not be in the office on Friday, as it is set up day. If you have any questions, please call before Friday.
What should Team Captains have with them on Walk day?
Prior to walk day, please relay this information to your team members:
Check in for Team Captains: 7:30 a.m.
Programs on Stage: 8 a.m. – 11 a.m.
The Walk steps off at 9 a.m. (sharp!)

What should Team Captains have with them on Walk day?
- Print out of your team members as well as the amount each one has raised as of 4/3/20.
- Team T-shirt to submit for T-shirt contest if applicable.
- Any off-line donations should be given to the Team Captain before or on Walk day.
- If members for some reason do not meet up with their team captain in advance of the walk, there will be a table at the check-in tent for donations drop off.
- Donations:
- Make checks payable to: NAMI Southern Arizona
- Memo line - make sure that the team name and team participant is on the check or envelope if cash. Otherwise, your team or team member may not get the proper credit.

- Provide your members with a meeting time e.g. between 7:30 – 8 a.m. since road lanes near the event will be closed for the walk by 8:30 a.m. and it may be difficult/slow to get into parking area.
- Provide your members with directions to 3359 S La Cholla Blvd Kennedy Park Fiesta Area-NW corner of Ajo and La Cholla. Parking is on the west side of La Cholla directly across from the lake entrance.) GPS will take you to the lake, you don’t want to go in lake entrance, it’s on the other side of La Cholla!
- Instruct them to walk to the Fiesta Area and check-in with the Team Captain or Team Leader (make sure your members know who that person is) in the Team Meeting Area, you have designated.
- We will have a photographer to take team photos prior to the walk at the start line so gather your group and assemble by the Walk banner as early as possible. First come, first served.
- Remind your team members to bring a refillable water bottle, wear comfortable shoes, sunscreen and a hat; it is likely to be a warm day. We will have water refill stations to fill water bottles and a limited number of bottles of water to reduce trash.
- Three routes are available and they all start together; 5k (3.12 miles), 3k (1.86 miles) and 1k (.62 mile). Walk begins at 9 a.m. and walkers must leave the Fiesta Area and start walking by 9:45 a.m. since closed roads will reopen around 10 a.m. to traffic. The ‘Kennedy Park Route Base Map’ is attached.
- Water and snacks for walkers as well as water bowls and treats for dogs are available at water stations along the 3k and 5k walk routes only. Pets must be on a leash and OK with crowds and other pets. Owners must pick up after their dogs (if they go –we have bags available at water stations). Pick one up before you leave to walk there are trash containers at the fiesta area and water stations on the routes. Please do not leave poop bags or trash along the route!
- Donated snacks and fruit will be available at the food tent before and after the walk while supplies last. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide hot dogs, as we have no way to cook them this year (2020).
Check-in and waivers for unregistered participants
- Make sure that your team members have pre-registered either online at namiwalks.org/southernarizona or on a paper registration form. If they have already pre-registered, they don’t need to check-in. We do not register people at the event! If they have not pre-registered, they will need to sign a waiver at the event - look for volunteers with clipboards near the check-in area.
Check-in and donations on Walk day
- Only Team Captains are to check-in at the Team Captain check-in table to turn in their team member’s donations and any paper registration forms. The Team Captain Check-In table will be located in the Check-In area (see attached: ‘Fiesta Area Layout Map’).
- NAMI staff will print a list of $100 fundraisers on the Wednesday prior to the walk of any of your team members that have raised $100 or more at that point. We will have tickets and a list in an envelope at the check-in table for each team captain.
- If members come late, they can turn in their money at the donation drop-off table in the check-in tent. If their donation gets them to $100 or more on Walk Day and they are not already on the team captain list for t-shirt tickets, they need to let the volunteer taking the money know so they can credit them and get a shirt ticket.
- Team captains will be in charge of providing one t-shirt coupon to those on the list in your captain envelope. They should redeem this ticket at the event t-shirt tent near the check-in area, sizes are limited and we cannot order more, so have them do this right away.
